Nonostante continui ad esibirsi regolarmente richiamando folle di spettatori, Tilikum è responsabile della morte di tre persone in tre differenti incidenti. Il primo incidente, verificatosi nel febbraio del 1991, ha visto Tilikum e altre due orche accanirsi contro un allenatore scivolato nella loro vasca; il secondo, nel luglio del 1999, è costato la vita a un ventisettenne che, rimasto da solo nel parco dopo la chiusura, era entrato incautamente nella vasca; il terzo, nel febbraio del 2010, ha invece portato alla morte della quarantenne allenatrice Alba Brancheau davanti a 12 spettatori.
